A Note from the Counselor:

Building Better Study Skills:  Middle and High Schoolers need good study skills to organize, review and remember information.  Here are some tips:  Encourage your teen to focus on what the teachers discusses and writes on the board.    When reading, pay attention to the titles that divide the chapters. These titles help point out main ideas.  Also, look over past homework assignments.

Make study time count!  Set aside study time every day, reviewing in shorter, daily sessions.  Big projects then are divided into small goals.  Example:  Study one chapter a night for a wee instead of all five chapters the night before.

Deal with distractions!  When your mind wanders, jot down your idea and put it aside to look at later.  Then the focus is put back on work.  You can review your thoughts after studying.

It is important to find methods that work and turn them into habits.
